What is a tip calculator?
A tip calculator shows the gratuity on a bill and the total after tip. Enter the bill and a tip percentage to find the amount to leave. A gratuity calculator can also help you compare preset percentages, while a split bill calculator shows what each person owes when you divide the total evenly.
The calculation is simple: Tip = bill x tip %. Per person = (bill + tip) / people. The result changes with the bill amount, the percentage you choose, and the number of people splitting the payment.
Why a tip calculator matters
Working out the tip before paying helps you see the full cost of a meal or service. You can check whether the total fits your spending plan and decide on the tip percentage before the payment screen adds pressure.
When you share a bill, seeing the per-person amount can make it easier to settle up clearly. Keep in mind that this calculator splits the total evenly. It does not assign individual food or drink items to different people.
How to use this tip calculator
- Enter the bill total you want to use for the calculation.
- Enter the tip percentage. The calculator offers quick comparisons at 15%, 18%, and 20%.
- Enter the number of people sharing the payment. Use 1 if you are paying on your own.
- Review the tip amount, total, per-person share, and quick percentage amounts before paying.
Tip calculator example
Worked example
For a $64 bill, a 20% tip, and 1 person splitting the payment, the tip is $12.80 and the total is $76.80. The per-person amount is $76.80. The quick tip amounts are $9.60 at 15%, $11.52 at 18%, and $12.80 at 20%.
How to read your tip calculator results
The tip is the gratuity alone. The total adds the tip to the bill. Per person divides that combined total by the number of people you entered.
The 15% / 18% / 20% row shows tip amounts for the same bill at those percentages. It does not change your selected tip or the main total. Check that the bill and tip percentage match what you intend to pay, then use the per-person amount to settle an even split.
How to use a tip calculator wisely
- 01
Choose the bill amount deliberately
Enter the amount you want to calculate a tip on. If the check includes items or charges you do not want included in your calculation, use the relevant bill amount instead.
- 02
Agree on the split before paying
Confirm that everyone is sharing the bill evenly before using the per-person result. For separate orders, work out each person’s share rather than treating the calculator’s equal split as an itemized split.
- 03
Compare the total with your spending plan
Look at the total after tip, not just the tip amount. If you are watching restaurant spending, record the total you actually paid so you can compare it with your own past spending.
Common tip calculator mistakes
Entering a dollar amount instead of a percentage
The tip field is a percentage. Entering the amount you want to leave as dollars can produce a result that does not match your intention.
Assuming an even split covers different orders
The per-person result divides the full total equally. It does not account for who ordered each item or for different contributions to the bill.
Checking only the tip
The tip is not the amount charged to your payment method by itself. Review the total, which includes both the bill and the tip.
The tip formula
Tip = bill x tip %. Per person = (bill + tip) / people.
Key terms
- Tip
- Money added to a bill as gratuity.
- Tip percentage
- The share of the bill used to calculate the tip.
- Per-person amount
- The bill plus tip divided evenly among the people sharing it.
Tip questions
Does the calculator split the tip as well as the bill?
Yes. It adds the tip to the bill, then divides that combined total by the number of people.
Can I use it for an uneven split?
No. The per-person result assumes an even split. For different order amounts, work out each person’s share separately.
Does the calculator decide what tip percentage I should use?
No. It calculates the amount for the percentage you enter and shows preset comparisons. Choose the percentage that fits your situation.
