What is an RV loan calculator?
An RV loan calculator estimates the monthly payment and total interest for a motorhome or camper loan. Enter the purchase price, down payment, interest rate and term to see how the loan may affect your monthly budget and the total amount you pay.
The RV loan calculator uses the amount financed, the monthly interest rate and the number of payments. Its payment formula is P × r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n), where P is the amount financed, r is the monthly rate and n is the number of payments. The calculator also accounts for any extra monthly payment you enter by applying it to principal.
Why use an RV payment calculator?
An RV payment is only part of the cost of borrowing. A longer term can lower the required monthly payment while increasing the time you pay interest. Looking at both the payment and total interest helps you decide whether the loan fits your budget and whether a different term or down payment is worth considering.
Use the estimate before you commit to a motorhome or camper purchase. You can compare offers by entering each offer’s APR, term, down payment and fees. The APR is a measure of borrowing cost; the CFPB explains what APR means. Confirm how a lender handles fees and whether they are paid upfront or added to the loan.
How to use this camper loan calculator
- Enter the RV purchase price. Use the price you expect to finance, not an unrelated estimate of the vehicle’s value.
- Enter your down payment. A larger down payment reduces the amount financed, all else being equal.
- Enter the interest rate as an annual percentage rate, or APR. Use the rate from a lender offer when you have one.
- Enter the loan term in years. Compare terms using the same purchase price, down payment and APR so you can see the effect of changing the term.
- Enter any extra monthly payment you expect to make. The calculator applies extra payments to principal, which can reduce interest and shorten repayment.
- Enter the origination fee if it applies. Check whether the lender expects you to pay it upfront or finance it, and make sure your estimate reflects that treatment.
RV loan calculator example
Worked example
With a purchase price of $85,000, a down payment of $8,500, an APR of 8.0%, a 15-year term, no extra monthly payment and a $0 origination fee, the amount financed is $76,500. The estimated monthly payment is $731.07. The result shows $55,093 in total interest over 15 years and a total of payments of $131,593. These figures show why it helps to review total interest as well as the monthly amount.
How to read your RV loan results
Amount financed is the principal used in the payment calculation. It generally reflects the purchase price minus the down payment, with any financed fees handled according to the calculator’s setup. Confirm the lender’s treatment of fees before relying on a comparison.
Monthly payment is the scheduled amount based on the entered loan details. Total interest estimates the borrowing cost over the repayment period. Total of payments combines the scheduled payments across that period. In the example, the total of payments is $131,593, including $55,093 in interest on $76,500 financed.
How to lower your RV loan cost
- 01
Compare lender offers using the same terms
Ask lenders for the APR, term, fees and amount financed, then enter each offer consistently. A lower monthly payment alone does not tell you which loan costs less overall.
- 02
Consider a larger down payment
If it fits your savings plan, a larger down payment reduces the amount you borrow. Recheck both the monthly payment and total interest rather than focusing on the payment alone.
- 03
Consider a shorter term
A shorter term usually means a higher scheduled payment, but it can reduce the time interest accrues. Check that the payment remains manageable alongside your other expenses.
- 04
Pay extra toward principal when practical
Enter an extra monthly amount to see its potential effect. Confirm that your loan allows extra principal payments without a prepayment charge, and direct the extra amount to principal.
- 05
Review fees before signing
Ask whether the origination fee is due upfront or added to the balance. If it is financed, it can raise the amount borrowed and the interest you pay.
Common RV loan calculator mistakes
Comparing payments without comparing loan terms
A smaller payment may come from a longer term, not a lower borrowing cost. Compare total interest and total payments as well.
Entering an interest rate instead of APR
Use the APR requested by the calculator and compare it with the APR on the lender’s offer. Check whether fees are included in the lender’s APR and how the calculator treats them.
Leaving out the down payment or fees
The amount financed affects the payment and interest estimate. Enter the down payment and account for fees based on whether you pay them upfront or finance them.
Treating the estimate as a lender quote
The result depends on the details you enter. A lender’s final terms may differ, so confirm the payment, fees and repayment conditions before accepting an offer.
The RV loan formula
Monthly payment = P x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n), where P is the amount financed, r the monthly rate and n the number of payments. Extra payments go straight to principal.
Key terms
- Amount financed
- The principal used to calculate the loan payment, based on the purchase price, down payment and any fees included in the loan.
- APR
- Annual percentage rate. It expresses the yearly cost of borrowing and can help you compare loan offers.
- Principal
- The amount borrowed, excluding interest that accrues over the loan.
- Total interest
- The estimated interest paid over the repayment period, based on the loan details entered.
RV loan questions
What credit score do I need?
Lenders set their own minimums; higher scores get lower rates.
Does an RV loan calculator include insurance, taxes or maintenance?
This estimate focuses on loan payments and interest. Budget separately for insurance, taxes, maintenance and other RV ownership costs.
How do extra monthly payments affect an RV loan?
The calculator applies extra payments to principal. That can reduce the balance faster and lower the interest paid, assuming your lender applies extra payments the same way and does not charge a prepayment fee.
Should I include an origination fee in the loan amount?
Include it in the financed amount only if the lender adds it to your loan balance. If you pay it upfront, account for it separately when comparing the cash needed to buy the RV.
Is the calculator result a guaranteed payment?
No. It is an estimate based on the inputs. Confirm the APR, fees, amount financed and payment schedule with the lender before you borrow.
