What is simple interest?

A simple interest calculator estimates interest using the original principal, an annual rate and the length of time. Simple interest does not add unpaid interest to the balance before calculating later interest. The calculator can help you compare borrowing costs or estimate interest on money you lend or deposit.

The formula is interest = principal × annual rate × time in years. Enter the rate as a percentage; the calculation uses it as a rate. If you choose months or days, the calculator converts that period into years to apply the formula. For days, it uses 365 days in a year; for months, it uses 12 months in a year.

Why simple interest matters

Interest affects the cost of borrowing and the return on money you lend or save. Knowing the estimated interest can help you compare offers, decide whether a purchase fits your cash flow, or judge whether a borrower’s proposed terms make sense.

For a business, the calculation can inform decisions about customer credit, supplier terms and short-term borrowing. For example, you can estimate the cost of a loan before using it to buy equipment, or estimate the interest a customer owes under a simple-interest agreement. Check the actual contract: fees, payment timing and other terms can change what you pay or receive.

Simple interest is different from compound interest. With simple interest, the calculation uses the original principal. With compound interest, interest can be charged on previously accrued interest. If the loan or account compounds interest, this calculator will not show its full cost or return.

How to use this simple interest calculator

  1. Enter the principal, which is the amount borrowed, lent or deposited. Use the amount on which the agreement says interest is calculated.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate as a percentage. Check whether the contract gives an annual rate and whether it uses simple or compound interest.
  3. Enter the length of time and select days, months or years. Use the time period that matches the agreement. The calculator expresses the period in years for its formula.
  4. Review the interest result and the principal-plus-interest total. Compare offers using the same principal and time period, and check whether fees or scheduled payments are excluded.

Simple interest calculator example

Worked example

With a principal of $10,000, an annual rate of 5% and a time period of 3 years, the formula gives $10,000 × 5% × 3 = $1,500 in simple interest. Principal plus interest is $11,500. The calculator shows the principal as $10,000.00, the rate per year as 5%, the time in years as 3, interest as $1,500.00 and principal plus interest as $11,500.00.

How to read your result

Simple interest is the estimated interest for the entered principal, rate and time. Principal plus interest adds that estimate to the original amount. For a borrower, that total is not necessarily the amount of each payment or the exact payoff amount on a particular date.

This calculation assumes the principal stays unchanged throughout the entered period. If you make payments that reduce principal, the actual interest may differ. The result also does not account for fees, missed payments, changing rates or contract-specific day-count rules. Use your loan or deposit agreement to confirm how interest is calculated.

Ways to reduce interest costs or improve returns

  1. 01

    Compare the full borrowing terms

Ask lenders for the rate, fees, payment schedule and payoff terms in writing. Compare offers for the same principal and time period. A lower stated rate may not mean a lower total cost if other charges apply.

  2. 02

    Borrow less or repay sooner

Consider whether a smaller purchase, larger down payment or shorter loan term fits your cash flow. A lower principal or less time generally reduces simple interest when the rate stays the same. Before paying early, ask the lender how extra payments are applied and whether the contract charges for early repayment.

  3. 03

    Negotiate customer and supplier terms

If your business lends to customers or carries supplier balances, review the agreed rate and payment timing. Consider requiring a deposit, shortening the payment period or renegotiating terms that leave too much cash tied up. Confirm changes in the written agreement.

  4. 04

Check how savings interest is calculated

If you are comparing deposit accounts or other savings options, confirm whether the stated rate is simple or compound and whether access rules or fees apply. Use a calculator that matches the account’s actual method before relying on an estimate.

Common simple interest calculator mistakes

  • Entering a monthly rate as an annual rate

The calculator asks for an annual rate. Check the rate period in your agreement before entering it, so you do not compare a monthly figure with an annual one.

  • Using the wrong time period

Select the unit that matches the time you entered. If a contract specifies a precise day-count method, confirm that method because the calculator’s estimate may not match it.

  • Treating the total as a payment schedule

Principal plus interest is an estimated combined amount for the entered period, not a breakdown of installments. Check the lender’s payment schedule for due dates and amounts.

  • Using simple interest for a compound-interest agreement

If interest is added to the balance and later interest is calculated on that larger balance, use a compound interest calculator instead. This simple interest calculator will understate the amount when compounding applies.

The simple interest formula

Interest = principal x annual rate x time in years.

Key terms

Principal
The original amount borrowed, lent or deposited on which simple interest is calculated.
Annual rate
The interest rate stated for a year. This calculator applies it to the entered time expressed in years.
Simple interest
Interest calculated on the original principal, without adding accrued interest to the amount used for later interest calculations.
Principal plus interest
The original principal combined with the estimated simple interest for the selected time period.

Simple interest questions

Simple or compound?

Simple interest is charged only on principal; compound interest is charged on interest too.

How do I calculate simple interest by hand?

Multiply the principal by the annual rate and the time in years. For time entered in months, divide the months by 12 to express the period in years. For days, use the day-count method specified by the agreement; this calculator converts days using 365 days in a year.

Does this result include fees or monthly payments?

No. The result estimates interest from the principal, annual rate and time. It does not include fees or show how scheduled payments change the outstanding principal.

Can I use this calculator for a loan payoff?

Use it for an estimate if the loan uses simple interest and the principal remains unchanged during the period. For an exact payoff, request the amount from your lender because payment history, fees and contract terms can affect it.
