How Maryland taxes your paycheck

Maryland uses graduated brackets in 2026, from 2% to a top rate of 6.5%. Only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.

Before the brackets apply, Maryland allows a standard deduction of $3,350 for single filers and $6,700 for joint filers and a personal exemption of $3,200 per filer.

Maryland counties add a local income tax on top of the state rate. Enter your local rate in the calculator so the estimate includes it.

Example: a $65,000 salary in Maryland

Worked example

A single filer earning $65,000 a year, paid every two weeks with no 401(k) or pre-tax benefits, takes home about $1,987.83 per paycheck in 2026. Each check loses $216.15 to federal income tax, $191.25 to Social Security and Medicare, and $104.76 to Maryland income tax.

Ways to raise your take-home pay in Maryland

  1. 01

    Contribute pre-tax

Traditional 401(k) contributions (up to $24,500 in 2026) and HSA contributions through payroll lower federal taxable income, and in most cases Maryland taxable income too.

  2. 02

    Update your W-4

If you got a large refund last year, too much is being withheld. A new W-4 puts that money in each paycheck instead.

  3. 03

Claim the 2026 federal deductions you qualify for

Qualified overtime premium (up to $12,500, or $25,000 joint) and tips (up to $25,000) can be deducted on your federal return for 2025 through 2028.

  4. 04

Check where local tax is owed

Local income taxes can depend on where you live and where you work. If you moved or work remotely, confirm your employer is withholding for the right locality.
