What is a drywall calculator?
A drywall calculator estimates how many sheets you need to cover a given area. Enter the combined area of your walls and ceilings, choose a sheet size, and include waste for cuts. The result helps you plan a material order and avoid coming up short.
A sheetrock calculator does the same job. Sheetrock is a familiar name for drywall, but the calculation is based on the area each sheet covers, not the name on the product.
Why a drywall sheet estimate matters
An accurate estimate gives you a better starting point for a project budget. You can enter a price per sheet to plan material costs, compare sheet sizes, and decide whether your planned purchase fits the room and your budget.
The area formula cannot account for every cut or layout choice. Door and window openings, angled walls, damage, and awkward room shapes can affect what you actually use. Check your measurements and room layout before ordering, and compare the estimate with your project plan.
How to use this drywall calculator
- Measure the wall and ceiling areas you plan to cover, then add them together. Enter that total in square feet.
- Choose the sheet size you intend to buy. The calculator supports 4 x 8 ft and 4 x 12 ft sheets.
- Enter a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts. The sample uses 12% waste; choose an allowance that fits your room layout and cutting plan.
- Enter the price per sheet if you want to plan material costs. Leave it at 0 if you do not want to include a price.
- Review the sheet count, area with waste, and coverage per sheet. Confirm your measurements and purchase plan before you order.
Drywall calculator example
Worked example
For 480 sq ft of wall and ceiling area, using 4 x 8 ft sheets, 12% waste, and a price per sheet of 0, the calculator estimates 17 sheets. The area to cover is 480 sq ft, and the area with waste is 537.6 sq ft. Each sheet covers 32 sq ft. The estimate rounds up to a whole sheet so the planned coverage is not short.
How to read your drywall calculator results
Sheets needed is the estimated number of sheets to buy based on your area, sheet size, and waste allowance. Area to cover is the total area you entered. With waste adds the allowance you selected, and coverage per sheet shows how much area the chosen sheet size covers.
Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a cut plan. The calculator uses total area and does not map the position of each sheet on a wall or ceiling. If the room has many corners or openings, review the layout and adjust your order if needed.
How to make your drywall estimate more useful
- 01
Measure each surface carefully
Measure walls and ceilings separately, then add only the areas you intend to cover. Recheck unusual shapes and sloped sections rather than relying on a rough room estimate.
- 02
Plan sheet layout before ordering
Sketch where full sheets and cuts will go. A layout can help you spot areas where offcuts may fit and where the room shape may require more cutting.
- 03
Use the price field for a budget check
Enter the price you have been quoted per sheet to estimate material spend. If you are comparing suppliers, use each supplier’s actual price and sheet size.
Common drywall calculator mistakes
Leaving out part of the project
Remember to include every wall and ceiling you plan to cover. A missing surface makes the estimate too low.
Choosing the wrong sheet size
The coverage per sheet changes with the selected size. Match the calculator choice to the sheets you plan to purchase.
Treating the estimate as a detailed layout
A total-area estimate does not show how sheets fit around openings, corners, or other obstacles. Check your layout before you place an order.
The drywall formula
Sheets = area x (1 + waste) / sheet area.
Key terms
- Coverage per sheet
- The area a single drywall sheet covers, based on the selected sheet size.
- Waste
- An allowance added to the area estimate for cuts and offcuts.
- Area to cover
- The combined wall and ceiling area entered into the calculator.
Drywall questions
Does the drywall calculator subtract doors and windows?
Enter the area you want covered. If you want openings excluded, measure the net area yourself before entering it.
Does this calculator include screws, joint compound, or tape?
No. It estimates drywall sheets and can help you plan sheet costs when you enter a price per sheet. Estimate other materials separately.
Can I use the estimate for both walls and ceilings?
Yes. Add the wall and ceiling areas you plan to cover, then enter the combined total.
Before you act on this result. Cordwell calculators and guides are educational estimates, not legal, tax, investment, lending or other professional advice. They rely on the numbers you enter and on simplified rules, and they can't see your full situation. Before you file, sign, borrow, invest, hire, change your withholding or form a business based on anything here, meet with a licensed contractor, engineer or the local building department who can review your specific facts and confirm the numbers. Rules change, and official agency guidance always controls.
